During paperboard manufacturing, cellulose wood fibers naturally align parallel to the direction the paper web travels through the mill. This is known as the grain direction.
### Why Grain Direction is Vital in Packaging:
1. Clean Folds Without Cracking: Paperboard folds smoothly and cleanly when creased parallel to the grain direction. Creasing perpendicular (against) the grain bends stiff fibers across their width, which can cause ugly surface cracking and jagged fold lines.
2. Box Stacking Strength: Corrugated flutes and paperboard grain should run vertically (top to bottom) in box side walls to provide maximum compression resistance when cartons are stacked on warehouse pallets.
3. Preventing Warping in Rigid Boxes: When wrapping paper is glued to greyboard, the grain of the wrap and the grain of the board must be aligned correctly; cross-grain gluing causes boards to bow and warp as glue moisture dries.
